I am a senior at SEM, my name is Chris Brown, and I am the team captain for SEM's new FRC (FIRST Robotics Compeition) team just formed this fall under the guidance of Ms. Huitt and Mr. McLoda. Like SEM’s ongoing FTC robot team we will have the opportunity to compete on an international level at the 2014 championships in St. Louis. Our rookie season starts in just a few days on January 4th when this year’s game is revealed, and then we only have 6 weeks to design, build and test our 100+ pound creation before the Dallas regional competition on March 13, 14, 15 at the Irving convention center. About 50 high schools from near and far compete each year at the Dallas regionals, currently there are 4 regional events in Texas this year. The average FRC team is made up of about 20+ students and about 5+ professional engineers and non-technical mentors to make this all happen, our annual budget to compete at a regional level is projected to exceed $12k with about half of this going toward entrance fees and the purchase of the “Kit of Parts” necessary for each year’s game. We have applied for several grants that have the potential of paying for a large portion of the costs and Ms. Huitt has generously given us the money to purchase most of the necessary tools and supplies, but we still need other things, like shirts, banners, buttons, stickers and more to promote our team. Most of all we are in desperate need of adult mentors, both technical and non-technical to guide us through this overwhelming process.
