Dallas ISD Rank in Class Regulation - Parent Survey
Hello Dallas ISD Parents!
The Dallas ISD has proposed new regulations to allow schools to select one of two options for determining students' class rank. The purpose of this survey is to collect your feedback about how you would like your student to be ranked at SEM. Your survey responses will be kept confidential and campus administrators will only receive summary data.
The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete. Please complete the survey by Monday, April 18th.Please take this important opportunity to make your voice heard.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact: Nora E. Douglas, Ph.D. Evaluation and Assessment firstname.lastname@example.org
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT CLASS RANK:
Option 1: All students in a class will be ranked. Option 2: Only the top ten percent of a class will be ranked. A student’s class rank will not be calculated or reported if the student is not in the top ten percent of the class. For those students not in the top ten percent of their class, class rank will not appear on any student academic achievement records.
The benefits of option 2 (only ranking the top ten percent of students) were discussed in the parent meeting and can be reviewed in Ms. Huitt's meeting presentation from April 12, 2016: PPT | PDF
Only ranking the top ten percent of students would reduce stress for students regarding class rank.
Academically accomplished students who are not in the top ten percent of their class would not be negatively affected.
Those students not in the top ten percent of their class would not be restricted from eligibility for some special university programs or financial aid based on their class rank.
On occasion, ranking could deter universities from admitting students.
The intense focus on class rank could discourage students from pursuing other interests.
60% of our families must vote for Option 2 for class rank to be dropped. Please Vote here!

Congrats to Robotics Champ!
Matthew Callahan, an SEM sophomore, is a member of our SEM team going to compete in the FTC Worlds Robotics Championship. Even more interesting is that he shares his love of robotics with middle school youth. He is a mentor to a middle school age FLL team that placed second in their regionals and has been invited to complete at Lego land! Congratulations Matthew!

We have envelopes available or you may write your child’s name/grade on any envelope and include payment. We have prior year’s books for sale. If your child is an upperclassman and you haven’t purchased all four years of books... it would be an awesome graduation gift to have the entire collection. (We currently have 2014, 2015, 2016 available for $35 each.) If relatives are asking what they should buy your child as a gift... send them to our website! Free shipping... ;-).
Our yearbook signing party will be moved to Friday, May 20. (originally scheduled for April 13.) This is a party where we distribute the yearbooks all at once and give the kids several hours after school to hang out and sign each others books. We provide food and decorations to make it a festive party. Please contact Marianne Leclerc if you’d like to help chair the event this year.
Forming next year's yearbook committee now!
Working on the yearbook in a leadership role is a GREAT thing to put on your college applications and really does give you good project management experience. We are already forming a committee for next year’s book, and are in search of an executive editor, and an editor for each grade. The executive editor needs to be someone who can rally the other students to be deliberate about taking high quality photos throughout the year, load them onto the yearbook server and build the yearbook pages - keeping an eye on good representation of the student body.
If you are organized and would sink your teeth into organizing the yearbook, please contact Marianne Leclerc.
We also need new parent volunteers as the parents who started the yearbook have kids who are graduating this year and its time to hand over the reins.
Along the same lines... we are looking for people (students and parents) who would like to work on the website committee as we strive to really build-out the site and make it a full repository for all school activities and events and make its calendar function more useful.
Please call Marianne (214 906 7022) or email (email@example.com) to discuss what all is involved in any of these tasks.

Schoola Resale Clothing Fundraiser
Our Schoola clothes fundraising drive is in full swing.
This fundraiser will help clean our closets of clothes we’ve outgrown and support our children at the same time! Schoola collects gently used adult, teen and children’s clothes and sells them online. We’ll receive 40% of the profits which helps to fund programs SEM programs.
You can help by donating clean clothing in, new or like new condition and place them in the bin which will be located in front of the SEM office. You can also help spread the word, encouraging others to donate!
Thanks for your support! We look forward to another great year!
