Message for Seniors from Mr Valerio re: FAFSA
Go to FAFSA.GOV DO NOT USE ANY OTHER WEBSITE. YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEND YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO SOME BOGUS AGENCY. FAFSA IS FREE. DO NOT PAY. EVER.
1. Start by requesting an FSA ID. You can only get an FSA ID if you have a Social Security Number. You need one, and your parent needs one (only one parent needs an FSA ID, but there are some exceptions - see note below). WRITE IT DOWN. DON'T FORGET IT. You need it for the next 4 years. a. If neither parent has a Social Security number, you cannot get them an FSA ID. You will be able to print a signature page at the end of your FAFSA that we can sign and mail.
2. Fill out the 2017-2018 form.
3. When given the chance, link your taxes using the DATA RETRIEVAL TOOL (DRT). If you successfully requested a tax transcript, this should be a breeze. a. Please pay attention to whose taxes they are asking for. At one point they will ask for your parents' tax info, and at another for yours (most of you don't have any, so this will be blank). Don't make the mistake of putting your parents' taxes down twice or it will give you twice the income.
4. When you finish the form, you'll be asked to "sign" it. Use your FSA ID to sign, and your parent uses theirs. Again, if your parent doesn't have a Social Security Number, they will need to print a signature page, sign it, and mail it to the address on the form. We can always log back in and print it at school if you don't have a printer at home. I will also have stamps and envelopes available for you.
