Shop at Amazon...Help Our School!
Our school has just opened an Amazon Associates account where people can click on our link, go to Amazon and shop, and the school can make a small percentage of the sales (like between 1% - 5%). This link will be up all year but will be great to use for holiday shopping! If you can remember when you're ready to buy something, follow these steps and then shop as normal:
Fever is a good clinical indicator of cold versus the flu; colds rarely cause a fever over 101 degrees, but the flu can result in a much higher, sustained fever.
Colds run their course in about a week, but the flu symptoms can persist for two weeks or more.
Both the flu and a common cold can be prevented by practicing good hand washing and keeping surfaces disinfected to stop the spread of germs. Also avoid touching your face during flu season.
Families should consider an annual flu vaccine, available every year in the fall, to lower the risk of getting the flu. Over-the-counter decongestants, pain relievers and fever reducers treat uncomfortable symptoms in both a cold and the flu, though caution should be exercised in young children, and all dosage instructions should be followed completely. If you’re unsure how much you should give your child, talk to your doctor.
For most cases of a common cold or the flu, lots of rest and plenty of fluids are the most common remedies. In severe cases of the flu, antiviral medications may be prescribed.
The importance of hand washing after using the restroom cannot be overstated. Germs are lurking on the toilet flusher, the door knob and even the sink faucet. In situations where hand washing is not possible, hand sanitizer is a better replacement than not washing at all. Most alcohol-based hand sanitizers remove 99.9% of germs.
We need our SEM parents to help the school meet its goal of 300 members. This demonstrates to the community and the Dallas ISD school district that SEM families are truly engaged. The PTSA wants to continue to receive recognition for our strong history of PTSA membership and active family involvement. We are currently at 90 members and have a way to go! We need your support. Our kids benefit from this investment

NCSSS, MIT Expand Partnership for Consortium Member's Students
We are excited to announce that NCSSS and MIT, with its unique engineering summer camp Beaver Works, will expand our partnership in 2017. This unique member benefit is a great experience for NCSSS member school students. During the summer of 2016, 22 Consortium member school students attended a four-week residential STEM program at MIT. Students gained valuable experience programming and racing an autonomous mini car.
Program offerings have been expanded for 2017. MIT is offering online courses that prepare students to program their own autonomous car, autonomous air vehicle or to build their own cognitive assistant. These online courses are FREE of charge and open to all staff and students at any of the NCSSS member schools. See the 2017 brochure.
Students who are successful in the online courses will be invited to apply for an invitation to MIT Beaver Works Summer Institute. Twenty students from NCSSS member schools will receive a full scholarship to attend the four-week program July 10-Aug. 4. Schools may also send teams to the capstone competition Aug. 5-6.
Registration for the online courses will begin soon. The first online course begins Monday, Dec. 19, with rolling enrollment. Students may join the first online course through January. Check out the full program brochure. If you have any questions, please email email@example.com.
WRITE-A-CHECK FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
Are you ready to do your part to support the SEM students and teachers? Here’s your chance! The PTSA at SEM is kicking off our easiest, most pain-free fundraiser of the year: the Write-aCheck Campaign. 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to supporting the SEM students. To participate, simply write a check to SEM PTSA and send to the school, or use our online form to indicate the amount of your donation and proceed to checkout. Your donation is used to provide special programs, activities and events for the students, and to provide for the academic and social needs of the SEM students and staff. Want to DOUBLE the power of your contribution? If your company provides matching donations for charitable contributions, please indicate that and we can provide assistance in making the application to our employer. Thank you in advance for your support and participation in this important fundraiser!
